Wine Wednesday – 2011 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin

2011 Gnarly Head Old Vine ZinI wasn’t expecting a lot out of this bottle of Gnarly Head but it was on sale for under $10 and thought I would give it a try. Well I was so pleasantly surprised by the smooth taste and texture of this wine that I became their newest fan.

The grapes that are grown on their gnarled 35-80 year old vines (hence the name) have some of the most intense dark fruit flavors with hints of chocolate, spice and toasted oak and this particular vintage is no exception. Very full-bodied with aromas of fresh fruit, subtle flavors and good tannins that lead into a slight peppery finish. Not your most intense Zinfandel but, in my opinion, one of the best in this under $15 price range.

I tried mine along with a pizza last night and it was the perfect pairing. You can also have with BBQ, chili, steak fajitas, spicy chicken dishes or sip with your favorite dark chocolate.

Price Range: $9.99-$13.99

  1. The intensity is softened by the “Old Vine” aspect, itself. As the vines age well, the grapes they produce tend to soften and smooth out. Hence, the polished, velvety smooth warmth of the Zin is what you taste. Good stuff, indeed.
